Sony Mobile has unveiled a new range within its smartphone line-up at MWC 2016 by introducing the Xperia X series. This includes three smartphones altogether: the Xperia X, Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA. We’ll concentrate on talking about the Xperia X (F5121) and Xperia X Dual (F5122) in this post and follow-up with separate posts on the Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA.
Sony has done a good job of introducing some key flagship specs of 2015 into this year’s mid-range offering, such as the 23MP camera and fingerprint sensor. In some areas, namely the camera and battery, Sony has taken these to the next level.
The Xperia X camera includes an all-new Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, created in collaboration with Sony’s Alpha α engineers. Simply click on the subject to focus and then this new tech will predict the objects motion, keeping it in focus throughout. The Xperia X uses a 1/2.3-inch 23MP Exmor RS rear camera sensor and 1/3-inch 13MP Exmor RS front-facing camera.
Sony Mobile has also worked on the battery side – the Xperia X has a two-day battery life, which we’ve seen from other Sony products, but the difference here is that Sony uses Qnovo’s Adaptive Charging technology to extend the life of your battery.
Qnovo’s QNS adaptive charging software measures the battery health in real-time and continuously adjusts the charging current. This results in a battery lifespan that is twice as long – in practice, this means around 800 charge cycles before the battery loses capacity versus 300-500 currently according to Forbes.
In terms of design, the Xperia X looks very similar to the Xperia Z3. It has a curved glass display within a rounded, continuous polycarbonate frame for a more comfortable feel. It also has a metal rear instead of glass, as seen in the Xperia Z series.
The Xperia X features a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display and uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chipset with 3GB RAM. The device will be available in 32GB (for single SIM) and 64GB (for dual SIM) variants and also support microSD memory cards. Other features include Bluetooth 4.2 and a 2620mAh battery.
The Xperia X series will launch in summer 2016, in four colours (White, Graphite Black, Lime Gold and Rose Gold). The device will be available in both single SIM and dual SIM variants. No pricing has been announced at this stage.
