Sony announced the Xperia XA1 Plus mid-ranger at IFA earlier today, a 5.5-inch FHD device that will sit between the 5-inch Xperia XA1 and 6-inch Xperia XA1 Ultra. Despite the familiarity of the ‘XA1’ family name, the XA1 Plus is positioned differently to its other family members.

First of all, the Xperia XA1 Plus is the only device in the XA1 range to feature a fingerprint sensor, which has a side-mounted power button as in all other Xperia devices. Secondly, the Xperia XA1 Plus welcomes a much bigger 3430mAh battery, significantly larger than the 6-inch XA1 Ultra with its 2700mAh battery.

Thirdly, less emphasis is placed on front camera duties with the Xperia XA1 Plus featuring an 8MP selfie snapper, similar to the XA1, but less powerful compared to the 16MP camera of the XA1 Ultra. The Xperia XA1 Plus has a 23MP 1/2.3-inch rear camera sensor with bright F2.0 lens.

The Xperia XA1 Plus is powered by a MediaTek Helio P20, 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. Other features include Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and USB Type-C. The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus has dimensions of 155 x 75 x 8.7mm and weighs 190 grams.

Sony’s design includes aluminium sides and a matte finish, giving the handset a premium look. The Xperia XA1 Plus will be available in three colours including Gold, Blue and Black. Sony hasn’t given an explicit launch date but says the handset will launch from Autumn 2017.
