Sony Mobile has announced the Xperia XZ2 Compact, the latest addition to its range of compact flagships, just six months after the introduction of the Xperia XZ1 Compact. The Xperia XZ2 Compact adopts the revamped design that Sony is introducing in 2018, with a curved body and frosted finish, which Sony says will give users the ultimate comfort in-hand.
The Xperia XZ2 Compact is the smallest smartphone to feature a 5-inch HDR display, according to Sony, with the use of a 2:1 (18:9) extended display and resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is also used for extra protection.
Again there is no headphone jack in the Xperia XZ2 Compact, although Sony does throw in a USB-C adaptor in the box. The fingerprint sensor is now on the rear, as expected. The Xperia XZ2 Compact also uses stereo speakers with S-Force Front Surround.
Sony has continued its trend of offering flagship specs in a smaller form factor, which means that the Xperia XZ2 Compact leaves out very little compared to the Xperia XZ2. This includes the use of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB UFS internal storage.
We see the exact same camera specs as in the Xperia XZ2. This means a rear snapper with 1/2.3-inch 19MP image sensor, and 25mm G Lens F2.0, capable of 960 frames per second super slow motion video at 1080p (FHD). 4K HDR movie recording is also possible, like the XZ2. The front camera has a 5MP 1/5-inch Exmor RS sensor with 23mm wide angle lens F2.2.
Battery life of 2870 mAh has been upgraded over the Xperia XZ1 Compact, which had a 2700mAh battery. However, the battery will be powering a bigger screen with higher resolution, so it will be interesting to see if real world battery life is any better.
According to Sony’s specification pages, it looks like a dual SIM option will be available for the first time in Sony’s ‘Compact’ range, which many have asked for over the years. Other specifications include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance
The Xperia XZ2 Compact has dimensions of 135 x 65x 12.1mm and weighs 168 grams. It will launch in four colours (Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink), when it hits stores globally from March 2018. The handset will come with Android 8.0.0 Oreo out of the box.
